Caesaris De Bello Gallico Libri Primi Initium

Gallia est omnis divisa in partes tris, quarum unam incolunt Belgae, aliam Aquitani, tertiam qui ipsorum lingua Celtae, nostra Galli appellantur. Hi omnes lingua, institutis, legibus inter se differunt. Gallos ab Aquitanis Garumna flumen, a Belgis Matrona et Sequana dividit. Horum omnium fortissimi sunt Belgae, propterea quod a cultu atque humanitate Provinciae longissime absunt, minimeque ad eos mercatores saepe commeant atque ea, quae ad effeminandos animos pertinent, inportant, proximique sunt Germanis, qui trans Rhenum incolunt, quibuscum continenter bellum gerunt. Qua de causa Helvetii quoque reliquos Gallos virtute praecedunt, quod fere quotidianis proeliis cum Germanis contendunt, quum aut suis finibus eos prohibent, aut ipsi in eorum finibus bellum gerunt.

Πᾶσα μὲν ἡ Γαλατία εἰς τρία μέρη διῄρηται· ὧν τὸ μὲν οἱ Βέλγαι, τὸ δὲ οἱ Ἀκυιτανοί, τὸ τρίτον δὲ οἱ ἐπιχωρίως μὲν Κὲλται, κατὰ δὲ τὴν ἡμετέραν φωνὴν Γάλλοι ὀνομαζόμενοι κατοικοῦσι· καὶ οὗτοι μὲν πάντες ἔς τε τὴν διάλεκτον καὶ τοὺς νόμους καὶ τὴν δίαιταν ἀπ’ ἀλλήλων κεχωρίδαται. Τοὺς δὲ Κελτοὺς ἀπὸ μὲν τῶν Ἀκυιτανῶν ὁ Γαρούμνας, ἀπὸ δὲ τῶν Βελγῶν ὅ τε Ματρόνας καὶ ὁ Σηκάνας διορίζουσι ποταμοί. Πάντων τούτων κράτιστοί εἰσιν οἱ Βέλγαι, πρῶτον μὲν ὅτι πολὺ ἀφεστᾶσι τῆς ἐν τῇ τῶν Ῥωμαίων ἐπαρχίᾳ ἡμερότητος τῆς διαγωγῆς, καὶ οὐ μή πολλάκις ἔμποροί σφισιν ἐπιμίσγονται, τὰ φιλοῦντα τοὺς ἀνθρώπους θρύπτειν καὶ ἐκθηλύνειν ἄγειν εἰωθότες· ἔπειτα δὲ ὅτι πρόσχωροί εἰσι τοῖς πέραν τοῦ Ῥήνου Γερμανοῖς, οἷς συνεχῶς πολεμοῦσι. Δι’ αὐτὸ δὲ τοῦτο καὶ οἱ Ἑλβήτιοι κράτιστοί εἰσιν ἐν τοῖς Κέλταις· καθ’ ἑκάστην μὲν γὰρ σχεδὸν μάχην τοῖς καθ’ αὑτοὺς Γερμανοῖς συνάπτουσιν, ἐκ τῆς σφῶν ἐξελαύνοντες ἢ καὶ εἰς τὴν αὐτῶν ἐμβάλλοντες .
