The opening sentence of the first book of Herodotus—the first book named after the Muse Clio—from Valla’s 1542 Latin translation.

Herodoti Halicarnassei historiae explicatio haec est, ut neque ea quae gesta sunt, ex rebus humanis obliterentur ex aevo, neque ingentia & admiranda opera, vel a Graecis edita, vel a Barbaris, gloria fraudentur, cum alia, tum vero qua de re isti inter se belligeraverunt.

Ἡροδότου Ἁλικαρνησσέος ἱστορίης ἀπόδεξις ἥδε, ὡς μήτε τὰ γενόμενα ἐξ ἀνθρώπων τῷ χρόνῳ ἐξίτηλα γένηται, μήτε ἔργα μεγάλα τε καὶ θωμαστά, τὰ μὲν Ἕλλησι τὰ δὲ βαρβάροισι ἀποδεχθέντα, ἀκλεᾶ γένηται, τά τε ἄλλα καὶ δι᾽ ἣν αἰτίην ἐπολέμησαν ἀλλήλοισι.
